Collecting data

Students will examine data produced by GAP and be asked to spot patterns in that data

Now it is hardly ever the case that a pattern appears by coincidence

Almost always spotting a pattern means that some mathematical property is forcing the pattern to be produced

By finding patterns the students find theorems

If we ask the right questions then the theorems they spot will be ones which they can then prove for themselves

This brings an element of the excitement of mathematical research into undergraduate teaching
